We have survived day 1 in New YorkWe are in an apartment about 10km out of New York. Nice roomy apartment,
oven,TV,air conditioner, stove, fridge,own bathroom,
ok neighbourhood but dont think I would spend too much time outside real
late at night anywhere in New York..... see picture 1000873
Central Park is shut due to storm damage - so we couldnt put up the
'tents' there - they will get used in the Nat. parks later on
We arrived here last night at midnight after some 27hrs of travel ..( a
few delays. eg they had to put new brakes on one American airways plane
just as well, as we landed at Laguardia airport which has short runways...
they certainly did use the brakes to stop they needed too
We finally got some sleep on the trip from Dallas tp New York. We struggled
a bit on the trip to Dallas. Slept for 9 hours last night - the apartment
is pretty dark- feel quite good now- dinner was good too ( home cooked)
Obviously we missed the storm some parts of the city still did not have
electricty. We did not see much evidence of flooding -however Straton
Island and lower parts of Manhatton are real bad - cannot get there as the
National Guard are on duty to stop the looting. That cuts out that option
on the trip!
Some underground/ subways were partially running today and it was FREE...
we spent alot of time on it - It got us to Times Square- 42nd st We did
at least 5 trips!!!!!!!! good value........ Have to pay tomorrow- we will
have to walk!
The subways look real old compared to melbourne and London and Paris too (
a little bit of name dropping...)
We were impressed with Times Square and Broadway. Lois wants to go to a
broadway show. We will do that on Monday ( discounted tickets of course)
I have checked out some shows too in the info centre. see picture 2
Picture 3 was to show Kathryn and I competeting in the marathon..... hope
you have not heard that they just cancelled it. - big issue over here.
We registered today at the expo centre and it was huge. Well Kathryn
registered and I obtained a marathon shirt (wont say how...the national
guard wasnt there)
The timing of the cancellation of the marathon is a joke however we now
have an extra day for sight seeing- it has put a lot of people out ( I
missed 2 games of cricket)
They had a free bus to take you to the marathon expo- like a pick up drop
off bus around then city - very good -why pay for a real bus trip.
Food is cheap ( not sure what it is in real restaurants- refer to picture 4
We have been shopping in Maceys.......... ( more name dropping)
Tomorrow we are off to the Empire State building and other attractions bit
limited -lots of places are still shut- as we contstantly get shown on the
TV
Actually canceling the marathon is bigger news now that the storm and the
election
only 15 days until we are back
